I am currently training to be a luthier at West Dean College in West Sussex. All proceeds from the attic go towards my fees and equipment. Here is a little bit of information about my life so far.
I am also on Instagram and Facebook and I will share news about the clothes and ephemera there as well as on this blog.
Sarnia de la Maré FRSA (also known by her creative alter-ego iServalan) is a multidisciplinary British feminist artist, writer, musician, and digital creator. Based in Gosport, Hampshire, her expansive practice bridges countercultural history, digital innovation, literature, and social commentary. [1, 2, 3]
Visual Art & Performance
- Background & Evolution: Emerging from the radical 1980s DIY punk scene, de la Maré has blended performance art, music, spoken word, and interactive installations. She previously ran a gallery and art shop in South Africa before returning to the UK, where she served as the Artist in Residence at the Brighton Arts Club, leading an influential six-year period hosting weekly underground performance art events. [3, 4]
- Artistic Style: She works extensively across physical and digital mediums, ranging from oil painting to intricate "scribble art" drawn by hand with a digital pen. Her satirical portraits and pop-surrealist caricatures critique power structures, celebrity culture, and ego. [2, 5]
- Alter-Egos: Her performance identities, such as the Countess of Brighton and Hackney, function as feminist critiques targeting class structures, beauty politics, and female agency. [3]
Writing & Multimedia Publishing
- Cultural & Personal Essays: Author of non-fiction works like MENO ND: Menopause, Neurodivergence, and the Reinvention of Self and The Orbit Theory: Reclaiming the Self in a Collapsing World, part of her Elderescence Academy series celebrating lifelong learning. [6, 7]
- AI & Technology: She writes critically on the intersection of technology and human imagination, including essays like Artificial Intelligence in Music: Blending Creativity and Technology. [8]
- Fiction & Audio Projects: Her catalog includes the speculative series The Book of Immersion, children's sci-fi (Rat Gang Crew), and historical romance shorts (Mills and Swoon). [9]
